My City: Kamakura

Calm waves, breathtaking sunset, and myriads of archaic buildings...

As soon as you get off the train, all you can sense is the smell of the salt from the ocean brought by the wind.

There is a town that never forgets to impress every single person who comes to visit: Kamakura.

Kamakura is located in the coastal area of Kanagawa Prefecture and has been recognized as one of the tourist traps in Japan. It is mostly known for its temples, beaches, Enoden, and the Great Buddha.

Even as a citizen of Kamakura, I find my town intriguing because its beauty is hidden everywhere. As I grow older, the way I see the town and the surroundings alter into the much greater view—I am convinced that this goes to all the visitors as well.

What I like about Kamakura is that the fact that—although it may sound ordinary—it has the face that only the residents know. Kamakura that everyone knows is far from the same as what reflects in the eyes of us. Around five in the afternoon when almost all the visitors start heading back to the station, places like the beaches turn into a place for relaxation and refreshment for the citizen. Pacific waves purify our soul, and the beautiful sunset tells us to be positive and to go easy. It is like hearing words of wisdom from nature and the town and is absolutely a precious moment.

Whenever I am down or troubled, I feel relieved and feel everything is going to be okay as I smell the saltiness and assurance in the air.

  1. I visited Kamakura more than 10 years ago, when I was in a primary school, so I hardly remember what I saw there, but I clearly remeber seeing the massive Great Buddha. Since I haven't been there for so long, Kamakura might be my next holiday destination. It is fairly close from Tokyo, so I hope to visit there alone, or maybe with my gf, but only if I had one...

  2. Kamakura have always been the place I want to go (instead of using visit) in Japan, I feel tranquility in there even though I have never been there.I want to go to see the sea and just sitting there by myself and let everything pop into my mind naturally as what they should be. Your intro about Kamakura makes me feel more eager to go the place and discover some part of true beauty.
